Axiom Interactive

The studio

An axiom is only worth publishing if breaking it would be profitable.

AXIOM INTERACTIVE PTY LTD is a puzzle studio in New South Wales. This page explains why the rules on the home page are written as axioms with costs attached rather than as values with adjectives attached.

Method

Values are free. Axioms are not.

Every studio says it respects players. The statement costs nothing, commits to nothing, and survives any subsequent design decision, because there is always a reading of "respect" that permits the thing you were going to do anyway.

An axiom is different in one specific way: it forbids something concrete and names what the prohibition costs. Axiom 4 says undo is unlimited and free, and then says out loud that this removes the most common monetisation hook in the genre. That second sentence is what makes the first one a commitment rather than a slogan.

It also gives you a way to catch us. Six numbered statements with dated changes is a document you can diff. A page of values is not.

Where the axioms came from

They are not derived from research and we are not claiming they are optimal. They are the six decisions we found ourselves relitigating, written down so they stop being decisions. Anyone is free to think some of them are wrong, and axiom 1 in particular rules out a genre a lot of people enjoy.

What would make us change one

Evidence that an axiom makes a puzzle worse for the people playing it, rather than merely harder to monetise. If a change happens, the page will say which axiom changed, on what date, and what it used to say.

Build

How an axiom becomes a check.

Four of the six are enforceable by a program rather than by discipline, which is the only reason to trust them.

Axioms and their enforcement
AxiomEnforced byFailure mode it catches
1. Solvable without luckSolver runs on every generated board before it can be servedA board that cannot be cleared from the visible state
2. No uninformed branchSolver records whether any step required a guessA board that is technically solvable but only by trying
3. Depth not clockBuild test plays through with every timer disabledContent silently gated behind the timed mode
4. Free unlimited undoStatic check that no undo path touches billing or advertising codeAn undo that shows an advertisement
5. No unrequested hintStatic check that no idle timer exists in the clientIdle detection creeping in as a retention feature
6. Finished stays finishedSchema check that no progression field is time-derivedA streak or decay column appearing in a later migration

These checks run against our own builds. They are not offered as a service, they certify nothing, and passing them is not a statement about anyone else's product.
